Mikey's Pick--Bright Eyes

Shawn sent me this link today for my birthday.  An excellent present.  Enjoy on NPR's first listen, Bright Eyes newest album: The People's Key.  Over the past few months this album and tour has had so much hype around it but after a listen I can say it lived up to all of it, and then some.  Fans will not be disappointed.  Hear the album in full below:

MIkey's Pick--Daniel Johnston

Take a listen to one of my all time favorite musicians, Daniel Johnston.  His music is as interesting as fantastic.  His life story is just as fascinating, an award winning biographical film was even made.  Dozens including Beck, TV On The Radio, Bright Eyes, The Flaming Lips, and many more have covered his songs, yet he still remains unknown to many.  I was recently in Austin Texas, his home town, where he has almost god-like stardom.  Giant murals of him and his album covers can be seen in and around the city.  You can't go a day without seeing someone pass by wearing a "Hi how are you?" t-shirt.  I too bought one.  Check some of these tracks out, but first watch this trailer to the documentary about him: The Devil and Daniel Johnston  This will give you a good feel for where the music is coming from.

Mikey's Pick--MC5

Let us flash back to 1969.  MC5 was at their prime ,playing unbelievable high energy charged shows like never seen before.  This Detroit band was short lived and broke up in 73 due to drugs problems, though they made an enormous impact on music forever.  Known as one of the pioneers of "Punk", and a personal favorite.

MC5--Kick Out the Jams

MC5--Ramblin' Rose

MC5--Looking at You

Mikey's Pick--Koenji Hyakkei

Not much time today for any posts today, so I leave you with this band I stumbled upon today.  I haven't given them too much time but so far the sound of this album is like a very strange funky opera mixed with total awesomeness; which is a good thing.  Check this track out.

Koenji Hyakkei--Rattims Friezz

Mikey's Pick--Blitzen Trapper

Blitzen Trapper's latest album Destroyer of the Void, is another solid album from the Portland Oregon based band.  With each album they grow into something new.  From simplistic folk, to spacey guitars, to noise rock, to their more refined combination displayed on their most recent album Destroyer of the Void.  Still, to me it sounds restless and still not a definition of where this band will eventually end up.  They are a very Dylan-esque group yet modern like the Fleet Foxes with very Beck-ish lyrics at times.  Keep an eye on these guys, I have a feeling their next album will be monumental.  You can hear their latest album from their site here.  Enjoy a few of my picks/singles that highlight their musical spectrum.

Blitzen Trapper--Furr

Blitzen Trapper--Wild Mountain Nation

Blitzen Trapper--Devil's A-Go-Go

Blitzen Trapper--The Tree

Mikey's Pick--Built To Spill

I didn't realize they put an album out last year.  This album, There Is No Enemy, is their seventh studio album.  I just gave it a few listen, I think it's great, especially a few tracks.  A lot of it is very dark but fueled with some really poppy hooks which makes for a good blend.  The guitar work in most of the songs is fantastic making for an album full of a kinda psychedelic folksy rock sound.  Definitely worth a listen.  Here are my picks of the album:

BTS--Good Ol' Boredom

BTS--Aisle 13

BTS--Oh Yeah

As I write this, I am staring at the mountain of snow that dumped here last night, in affect to that, here is a tune from The Halo Benders, Doug Martsch's other band:
The Halo Benders--Snowfall

dreamer's pick--Adele

It's not very often that a single voice has the ability to cut right through you, tear and pull on every emotional cord within you, and then somehow manages to heal every wound as magically as Mommy could when kissing your boo-boo to make everything better. When I listen to Adele, this is the kind of ride I am taken on. With her debut album, 19, I found myself not being able to stop listening for months. She hits the notes, strums your heartstrings, makes you cry, but leaves you with a sense of empowerment, and a longing for more. So you can imagine the excitement I felt when I heard she had a new album coming out! Adele's 2nd LP release, 21, will be released in the US on February 22, 2011. From what I have heard so far, she has done it again. Don't believe me? Listen for yourself.

Adele--Chasing Pavements (Official video for first single off 19)

Adele--Daydreamer (close your eyes, listen with headphones)

Adele--Rolling In The Deep (Official video for first single off 21)

Adele--One And Only

Mikey's Picks--Break Science-&- Paper Diamond

Under the Pretty Lights Label, two separate artists each released really  deep hitting super EPs yesterday.  Sounds terrific right?  Wait till you hear them.  Both these EPs are free downlands if ya dig em, just head over to their sites.  Try not to blow your speakers with these powerful tracks.

Break Science--Further Than Our Eyes Can

Break Science--Shanti

Break Science--Zion Station

Paper Diamond--Levitate

Paper Diamond--All Green Lights

Paper Diamond--So Precise

Mikey's Pick--Peter Bjorn & John

Due in March to put out their sixth album, Gimme Some.  The Swedish trio are calling it "a return to form", meaning with this album, they intended to go back to their roots and the like of the album Writers Block.  Yesterday, they released their single on itunes:  Second Chance.    I haven't listened to the whole album yet, but I am diggin' what I have: a lot!  Looking forward to the spring.

PB & J--Second Chance

PB & J--I Know You Don't Love Me

PB & J--Breaker Breaker-(video)

Mikey's Pick--Midnite

Roots Reggae at it's finest.  Midnite might be one of the best modern reggae bands going.  They have been making music since the late eighties and have put out so many excellent albums, it is hard to keep track of them all.  Hailing from St. Croix, they mix the old school reggae sounds with perfectly written lyrics regarding our more modern world culture.  Yesterday, they did it again.  Teaming up once again with Rastar to release another killer album.  It has been awhile since they have worked with Rastar so it is a welcome reunion.

My Picks of the album:  Treasure

Midnite--Humble Man

Midnite--Patience

Midnite--Scientist Black

Mikey's Pick--Liars

This band put out their fifth album last spring.  This album, Sisterhood, was the first album I had ever heard by them.  I was hooked.  I was missing out for sure, this album threw me into another world and dimension, at times a violent one.  This album flows from screaming punk rock into sometimes eerie psychedelic sounds: before having a listen prepare yourself for this journey.

Everything about this band is interesting from the accordion-like packaging of their album, to their very strange/artsy website.  Be sure to check their site out it's a trip.  Here are a couple picks from the album.

Liars--Scissor  (MUST SEE!!)

Liars--Proud Evolution

Liars--Scarecrows On A Killer Slant LIVE!

The album comes with a bonus disc with fantastic remixes by the likes of Sound Atlas, Thom Yorke, Devendra Banhart, and others.

Mikey's Pick--Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus released the album Cosmogramma last year which has reached incredible heights becoming one of the best albums of the year on many people's lists.  I have yet to listen to the whole thing but from what I have heard, I really dig.  Just listened this track featuring Thom Yorke (Radiohead) doing the vocals and had to share.  Anything Thom does is sometimes very strange but always pretty amazing.

Flying Lotus and Thom Yorke--And the World Laughs with You

And a very trippy video from the album:  Flying Lotus--MmmHmm

Mikey's Pick--Kwoon

I would like to highlight this band with this one single music video.  It really is perfect.  The band is pretty good, great for relaxing.  They have two albums that deserve a listen. They have reached fame worldwide somewhat due to the amount of awards they received for this song and video.  If I am friends with you personally, I am sure I have made you watch this at some point, but for the rest of you, enjoy!

Kwoon--I Lived on the Moon

Mikey's Pick--Sound Tribe Sector 9

Sound Tribe Sector 9 is easily one of my favorite all time bands.  The song "Somesing" alone puts them in my top five every time.  They were about to go on their US tour when just a coupe days ago they had to cancel all dates.  Yes a total bummer, but more importantly, we all hope David Murphy's (the bassist) cancer treatment goes well.  I highlight this band with a couple fantastic jams to check out.

STS9--Tokyo

STS9--Metameme

STS9--Somesing-LIVE!

Mikey's Pick--The Malah

The Malah, is a S. Carolina based trio and an electrifying jam band.  The market today is flooded with jam bands all of which seem to sound the same but The Malah is able to rise standing out among them.  I love their grooves and earthy rhythms.  They are high energy improvisational music to keep your feet moving.

They have ton of music available so be sure to check out their websites.

The Malah--Lo N Behold-LIVE!

The Malah--Stealth-LIVE!

Mikey's Pick--The Clientele

What a band this is!  The Clientele is beautiful. Hailing from London, they are a massively overlooked band.  They have put out over a dozen albums and EPs throughout the course of the past decade yet still fly under the radar for the most part.  The more I hear, the more I fall in love.  They have an ocean of music and something for everyone, so dive in.  Suburban Light is my favorite album from them, but here are my picks from various albums to get ya started.
Enjoy.
The Clientele--Reflections After Jane (2000)

The Clientele--"I Can't Seem To" Make You Mine  (2005)

The Clientele--Bookshop Casanova  (2007)

The Clientele--The Queen of Seville  (2007)

Mikey's Pick--Four Tet

There Is Love In You, hit the scene almost exactly one year ago.  From there, it blasted out of stereos all year long claiming itself to be, in many people's minds, one of the best electronic albums of the year.  This album reminds me of summer, even on this rainy and cold afternoon.  Enjoy my picks of the album.

Four Tet--Love Cry (album single)

Four Tet--Circling

Four Tet--Sing--LIVE! this is nice

Shaun's Pick, Festival Watch 2011- Coachella

All I'm going to say is:

Mikey's Pick--A Sunny Day in Glasgow

Sometime in October this ever changing band released the album Autumn Again.  This album is perfect company to your peaceful morning cup of coffee; it is a dream translated into sound.  This album is a free download and only able to be purchased on limited vinyl.  Enjoy my picks of it.

This VIDEO is pretty awesome:
ASDIG--So Bloody, So Tight

And a keeper from the album
ASDIG--Drink Drank Drunk

Shaun's Pick- Broken Social Scene

I found this very interesting, the six to nineteen member Canadian indie-rock band Broken Social Scene is playing a show at Terminal 5 in NYC tonight, and the entire show will be broadcasting live to YouTube. This live show will be available at the Bowery Presents YouTube channel when the show starts at 9PM.

Until the free show starts, enjoy some songs from their latest album, Forgiveness Rock Record.

All to All (the point of this video loses me...but the song is great.)

Shaun's Pick- The Decemberists

I know that this album was one of Mike's picks last week, but the King Is Dead was officially released today on iTunes. The King Is Dead breaks away from the album-long storytelling formula that made their previous albums so popular (The Crane Wife, The Hazards of Love) and decided to embrace simplicity. The epic guitar solos and children choirs from Hazards are now gone, and replaced with songs that have roots in country and folk (most of the songs feature country legend Gillian Welch, making for some amazing harmonies.) The stripped down sound works however, and makes this album reminiscent of their older work (before their albums became epic musicals.) Whether they decide to return to musicals or not, the Decemberists have proved that they are comfortable in the complex language of music. When listening to this album, just remember that sometimes the simplest songs can be the most difficult. The album can still be previewed at NPR, and I recommend purchasing it:The King Is Dead (NPR)

And just so you can hear how different this album is then their blood-soaked predecessors...

The Rake's Song (from the Hazards of Love)

The Perfect Crime #2 (from The Crane Wife)

Shaun's Pick- The National

After making the tops of many people's lists for their previous album Boxer, The National returned in 2010 to release High Violet, bringing more melancholy greatness delivered with somber rock and baritone vocals. The National recently performed on Austin City Limits, and thanks to the power of the internet we are allowed to watch this glorious performance (once they post it online.) Until then enjoy this preview until the video is posted, and check out some of their other songs:

and here's some more just because Boxer is a great album too,

Mikey's Pick--Iron and Wine

It has been three years since a studio album from Iron and Wine.  This album sounds amazing.  After spending some time searching the internet listening to the songs here and there I can say on January 25th this is a must purchase.

NPR has a free listen and video of Iron and Wine preforming earlier this month in New York.  Here is the link for the full album live from start to finish.  Thanks again NPR:  Iron & Wine LIVE!!!

Mikey's Pick--Praxis

Praxis is a sort of musical project/experiment heavily relying on improvasion.  Laswell leads the band with members such as Buckethead, Bernie Worrell--(P-Funk-Talkingheads), and Brian--(Primus).   Hitting every genre from, funk, hip-hop, ambient, jazz, and heavy metal, each album is quite the trip.  Their next album is due on the 25th and won't disappoint fans.(This album has in the past been released in Japan)  What I really dig about this band is how Laswell brings so many guests onto the album so each song is different from the others.  When listening expect songs to feature Les Claypool (Primus), Seji Tankian (System of a Down), Iggy Pop, and yes, even Wu Tang Clan, to name a few.  This album is stacked with talent but is it any good?  Use this link below to check out many of the songs Praxis has streaming from the upcoming release.

Praxis--My Spacepage

Mikey's Pick--Panda Bear

Today Panda Bear announced the date for his latest album to be released April 19th 2011.  Panda Bear, a member of Animal Collective has had great success with his solo career.  The majority of the album is a collection of his singles remixed by Sonic Boom.  In addition, Panda Bear has added several unreleased original tracks. Two tracks from the album were released late last year, have a listen.

Panda Bear--Tomboy

Panda Bear--Slow Motion

And an older classic:

Panda Bear--Bros

Mikey's Pick--Bele Fleck & The Flecktones

Victor Wooten has announced Bele Fleck and the rest of the gang are in the studio to put out an album this year.  Date is TBA.  This is great news, for it has been two years since their last album.  To get us all back in the mood for these guys. Enjoy my pick, one of my favorite bass solos from my favorite bassist Victor Wooten.  Part 2 is jaw dropping:
Bele Fleck--Sinister Minister, Part 1
Bele Fleck--Sinister Minister, Part 2

Mikey's Pick--Soldiers of Jah Army

Last month SOJA released a three track EP to kick off their Everything Changes world tour.  I didn't get into these guys until last summer when they came to play at the Beachcomber in my home town.  Now I am hooked.  These guys are the real deal when it comes to reggae.  They are lyrically amazing and stay true to the classic reggae sound.  Right now they're jammin' in S. America and making their way back to the US on their tour. They have a ton of music and will be on tour in the states again this month so be sure to check them out.

The first track off the new EP:
SOJA--Everything Changes

The first scene and last of an awesome DVD:
SOJA--LIVE in Hawaii!!!part one
SOJA--LIVE in Hawaii!!!part ten

Mikey's Pick--Cage The Elephant

Cage The Elephant released their second album yesterday.  This album is full of good old fashion rock n' roll.  Throughout the album, Matt Shultz yelps and harmonizes with his distinct high pitched voice backed by noisy guitars reminiscent of Curt Cobain (Nirvana), Francis Black,(Pixies) and Beck.  I caught them last night preforming on Letterman; they rocked.  While the band believes their music sucks, and that they are only part of the mainstream music industry they loath.  I, and the rest of their fans disagree.  Rock n' Roll is an elephant that can not be caged.  This is what mainstream rock needs, Kings of Leon, please step aside.

Here are a few tracks off the new album:

dreamer's pick--Creepoid

This is a band that you have never heard of, but once you listen you will not get enough. Today marks the release of their first full-length LP, Horse Heaven. I can not find the words to describe my instant love for it yet, so I will leave you with one of the best descriptions of the band I could find in my search frenzy. XPN calls Creepoid "an exciting new lo-fi indie-psych dream pop group with roots from deep down South in Austin TX and currently residing in Philly. Creepoid has a sad, dark hallucinogenic sound. Think Beck and Lou Reed drinking beer at the Modern Lovers practice space listening to Mazzy Star." Swoon.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the entire album with headphones here:
Creepoid--Horse Heaven

Mikey's Pick--Cake

Cake's much anticipated album "Showroom of Compassion" was released today!  It has been a while for these guys, seven years, they've ditched their label and came up with this.  The album for the most part is classic Cake, but as the album moves it slowly turns into a Cake I have never heard.  "Teenage Pregnancy" for example, is a very cool song driven by a piano providing us with a side of Cake we have not ever heard.  I would also recommend "The Italian Guy" for a new perspective on Cake.  In this song they include some fancy string work and some subtle horns.  The album is streaming from Rolling Stone Magazine, be sure to check it out.
Video from the album:
 Cake--Sick of You

And the link to Rolling Stone Stream:
Cake--Showroom of Compassion, Album-Full Listen

Mikey's Pick--Field Music

A blast from the past, the two brothers come back together to craft a 20 track album worthy of heavy praise.   Gorgeous voices and perfect percussion sided with guitar rifts and melodies to satisfy any listener.  Their last album was released in 2007, this album definitely refreshes.  What I love about this album is that there is so much going on in a lot of these songs, I can tell this is going to be sitting in the stereo for a long time.

Field Music--Measure

Field Music--Effortlessly

Field Music--A House is not a Home (video)

Mikey's Pick--Bonobo

Black Sands is the latest album from Bonobo.  It is pretty close to perfect.  This was released in 2010 but being one of my favorite albums of the year it is still in my rotation.  From the first track, Bonobo prepares the listener for take off.  From there wave upon wave of horned and stringed instruments burst in and out carried by the underlying groovy bass guitar.  Throughout the album Andreya Triana's voice subtly breaks in and out.  It is beautiful.  Everything on this album is powerful and unique yet because of how well it is crafted together it is subtle and relaxing at the same time. The track "Kong" does it for me. This album has the perfect balance every artist strives for.  Dig this guy.

Bonobo--Kiara

Bonobo--Animals

Bonobo--Kong

Shaun's PIck--Monsters of Folk

Monsters of Folk is a super-group that contains Mike Mogis and Conor Oberst from Bright Eyes, Jim James from My Morning Jacket, and M. Ward from She & Him. So far they've only come out with one self-titled album in 2009.  We all hope they tour again sometime soon.  Here's a full length video of their recently aired Austin City Limits show.

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Mikey's Pick--Radiohead

A high quality fan made and Radiohead approved video of their live Haiti benefit concert was released. Yes, the whole show.  Radiohead would love you to donate.  You can go to their site and download it for free or watch the you-tube version of it here by this link:

Radiohead--LIVE Haiti Benefit Concert

Any release of Radiohead is a perfect gift and better than Christmas.  This show is great, 24 songs with an intimate and very fun vibe to it.
MORE GOOD NEWS!!:  If you don't already know, Radiohead will be putting out another album this year.  The date has yet to be posted.  I eagerly await.

Mikey's Pick--Bibio

This UK producer is just what I need on this snowed in day: relaxing, minding wandering, head bobbing beats.  This guy is great, he covers a wide variety of hip-hop, rock, techno, and funk in each song yet they seamlessly flow into each other through strange ambient melodies. He has a new album coming out in March so we can all look forward to that.  Enjoy.

Bibio--The Apple and the Tooth

Bibio--Sugarette

Bibio--Jealous of Roses

Bibio--Fire Ant

Mikey's Pick--RJD2

RJD2, a fantastic DJ/producer which in the past decade has completely blown up.  His music is everywhere now, from surfing videos to an endless list of television commercials.  He is most famed for his instrumental hip hop beats, as he provides beats for many successful artists.  He just released three remixes of the song Glow off his 2010 album.  These tracks are a free download included with a music video. Check those out here:

RJD2 new GLOW remixes download and listen

And some well known keeper beats:

Mikey's Pick--O'Death

I have never heard of these guys until the other day.  WOW!  How could I have missed them?  They tour non-stop and with a lot of my favorite groups.  If I was to describe their sound I would use the word twisted.  They are everything great, only mashed up into something very unique and new.  They are as if Glen Danzig and Neil Young had a baby and then ditched it in a swamp with a banjo to grow up with.  They are metal, they are blue grass, they are punk, they are folk.  They are modern Americana.  I am also very excited to hear they have a new album coming this spring.  Luckily for me these guys live on the road so they most likely will be around my neck of the woods sometime soon.  This time I know what to look for.
The first song, is how I got hooked:
O'Death--Low Tide

O'Death--Home

O'death--Vacant Moan, LIVE Session

Mikey's Pick--Easy Star All Stars

If you know reggae you know these guys. This reggae group specializes in dubbing our favorite rock albums of the 20th century.  They made fame from dubbing Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon" which in many people's minds is of equal greatness.  They later went on to dub Radiohead, Ok Computer and The Beatles, Sgrt. Peppers album.  These guys have been around for a while but sadly for them, their tribute albums do better than their own material.  But who cares, Dub Side might be one of the best reggae albums in the past decade.  If you get a chance to go see these guys live, Do it! Just make sure to bring Visine.

Dub Side of the Moon:
ESAS--Money
ESAS--Us and Them

Radiodread:
ESAS--Paranoid Android

Easy Stars Lonely Dub Band:
ESAS--When I Am 64

Shaun's PIck--The Weakerthans

The Weakerthans are an indie rock band from Winnipeg, Canada. The most interesting thing about this band is their lyrics, in one song for example, they sing from the perspective of the lead singers cat.
Enjoy:

Mikey's Pick--Jake Shimabukuro

Aloha!  This guy will be a legend.  He brings to the ukulele what Eric Clapton brought to the guitar.  He released his latest album titled Peace Love Ukulele January 4th.  I will tell you now it is everything you hoped for and more.  With this album he not only brings his amazing talent with the ukulele but he also brings a whole band backing him.  What I love most (besides the obvious) about him is how he incorporates story telling into his performances, he is really funny with them . Check this guy out.

This is the video I saw of him a few years back that got me hooked:
Jake S.--While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Live in Central Park)

From his new album and streaming from his website:
Jake S.--Bring Your Adz

And a live solo bluegrass tune:
Jake S.--Orange World

Mikey's Pick--T Rex

T Rex led by Marc Bolan was a massive group during the sixties and seventies paving the way for folk, punk, glam rock and present day indie rock.  These guys were pure rock and roll at it's best and I love it.  Unfortunately Marc along with his music died in a car crash ending the band's carrier far too early. Their legacy stays with us in their untimely songs.  Enjoy this trip and some of the songs that made them famous.

T Rex--Cosmic Dancer

T Rex--Children of the Revolution LIVE!

Mikey's Pick--Underworld

Finally was able to give their latest 2010 album "Barking" a listen, and well I have mixed feelings.  What is interesting about this album is how many guests are featured leaving each song extremely different from each other and the band's previous sound.  I wouldn't say it is a let down of an album I would say it's just unremarkable.  Underworld has been an electronic Renaissance  for almost three decades so they are allowed an okay album once in a while.  I will say I have been able to have seen them live on the Oblivion With Belles tour, and it was one of the best shows of my life.  Underworld will always be one of my all time favorites, this album...not so much.
Some of the best tracks from their latest:

Underworld--Bird 1

Underworld--Grace

And some older well known, I hate to say it, better tracks.  But they have so much music so dig in.

Underworld--Born Slippy

Underworld--Pearls Girl LIVE!

Underworld--Jumbo

Underworld--Push Upstairs

Mikey's --Brian Eno

If you are not familiar with the name Brian Eno, I am sure you have felt his influence in some way or another.  Brian Eno might be the most influential artist of all time.  His work is everywhere.  Most recently he has put out an album titled Small Craft on a Milk Sea.  A review?  It's Eno, it's beautiful.  You can watch some of the improvisational videos, and interviews along with some of the tracks of the album from his website.

Here is the link:
Brian Eno--Small Craft on a Milk Sea

A couple links to some excellent earlier solo material:

Mikey's Pick--The Decemberists

The Decemberists will release their album The King is Dead in two weeks but they are currently streaming the album in it's entirety on NPR.  This Portland folk/rock band continues their use of a variety of instruments, and good harmonizing, on each track.  The album as a whole is pretty good lyrically and musically.  Personally, I am not going to run out and buy it but I did very much enjoy the free listen.  It is worth a listen for sure.  If you like any previous music by them, you will be very satisfied with The King is Dead.  Thanks NPR.

The Decemberists--The King is Dead (New Album)
